In 1958, Dr. Rupert B. Turnbull Jr. of Cleveland, USA, first proposed enterostomal therapy as a new discipline: "enterostomal therapy." He is therefore known as the father of enterostomal therapists.

Norma Gill Thompson was the world's first enterostomal care technician (later known as an enterostomal therapist) trained by Dr. Temple.
In 1961, she and Dr. Temple founded the world's first enterostomal therapist school, marking a significant step forward in the development of enterostomal care.
